And already there has been that one person (as there is in almost every class) to speak up and let me know that we aren’t going to get along very well. Our assignment was to write some brief scenes using stage direction only, no dialogue. We went around and all of them were read before the class (it’s a small class) and we made various interpretations about what was going on. Most of them were pretty straightforward, as I thought mine was as well.
My scene was just of a man and woman in a waiting room. The man is visibly nervous and pacing. The woman is calmer and tries to console him a bit. Like I said, these were very brief scenes. But so this girl in my class starts suggesting some way off the wall theory that wasn’t even implied in the slightest. She said that she got from the scene that they were a couple waiting for STD test results and that the woman must have had an extramarital affair which is why the man would be the one so nervous. And that the end of the scene leaves her “wanting to know what she did.”
It was so off the wall. I was just like, “uhh thanks.” It’s the first female character I used in this class and she’s already been labeled a whore. Great start to the semester.
